AN OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK

INTRODUCTION
​
The Department of Social Work trains social workers who can work directly or indirectly as generic practitioners in communities and in various social welfare agencies including public, private, voluntary and non-governmental organizations. It is also envisaged that such training will produce both proactive and reactive social workers who can effectively respond to the newly emerging social problems in the contemporary societies. Through its curricula the department also aims to produce graduates who can self-employ themselves to respond to societal needs.
TRAINING PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK

The Department of Social Work offer training programmes which are Basic Technician Certificate in Social Work (NTA Level 4), Technician Certificate in Social Work (NTA Level 5), and Ordinary Diploma in Social Work (NTA Level 6).
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

The applicants for Basic Certificate in Social Work (NTA Level 4) must have the following minimum qualifications
-
Certificate of Secondary Education with a minimum of FOUR PASSES excluding religious subjects, or
-
National Vocational Award (NVA) Level 3 (with at least 3 passes of CSE).
2. Applicant to Technician Certificate in Social Work (NTA Level 5) should have the following minimum qualifications:
-
Holders of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (ACSE) with at least (One principal pass and subsidiary) excluding religious subjects; OR
-
Holders of NTA 4 in Social Work with minimum qualification OR
-
Holders of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in social work-related disciplines including Community Development, Nursing, Gender, Child Protection, Community Work, Counseling, Youth Work, Law, and Psychology.

Holders of Basic Technician Certificate in Community Health (NTA Level 4).
3. The NTA level 6 is the Ordinary Diploma qualification in social work. The programme has been designed to provide intermediary knowledge and skills in social welfare service provision. Applicant to Ordinary Diploma in Social Work (NTA 6) should have the following minimum qualifications:

The applicant to Ordinary Diploma in Social Work should have Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in social work.
